Travelodge boss resigns as chain tackles security after sex assault at hotel
The chain is rolling out new room-access rules and staff training after an independent review found security failures, with changes live across more than 600 hotels.
Travelodge CEO Jo Boydell stepped down Thursday after 13 years with the firm, with chief financial officer Ray Reidy replacing her on an interim basis while the company searches for a permanent successor.
Boydell faced intense criticism for her response to a sexual assault at a Maidenhead Travelodge, prompting former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to urge her to "seriously engage" with the Government on safety reforms.
Barrister Paul Greaney KC is leading an independent safety review, while new room access policies are now live across all 600 hotels backed by training for 12,000 customer-facing colleagues.
Ongoing efforts include a partnership with a Violence Against Women and Girls expert and participation in the Guest Security Working Group to "overhaul its safety procedures" across the industry.
Reidy reported a "solid trading performance" with revenue growth of 4.2 per cent to £491.3 million for the half year ending June 30, 2026, as the firm navigates cost pressures.
The CEO of the British budget hotel chain Travelodge is stepping down following an uproar over the sexual assault of a female guest in a hotel room. The attack raised concerns about Travelodge's safety measures. Consequently, CEO Joanna Boydell has decided to resign.
