Thousands more university jobs cut as financial crisis deepens
Universities face financial deficits with four in 10 English institutions in the red, leading to over 12,000 job cuts and further savings equivalent to 3,000 roles, union says.
- Last year, University and College Union analysis found universities announced more than 12,000 job cuts across the sector.
- The government said four in 10 English universities are now in financial deficit, and it increased tuition fees last year while promising further reforms soon.
- The University of Edinburgh plans £140m in cuts, about 1,800 jobs, with students reporting reduced support services and increased worry, according to Caspar Cubitt and others.
- UCU members will vote on potential UK-wide strike action later this month over a 1.4% pay offer, and Jo Grady, UCU general secretary, described the cuts as `brutal` and said staff are demoralised.
- Dr Zak Hughes says he faces redundancy and warns, `I won't be able to pay my rent, I will be in my forties and living back at home,` while the union says additional cost savings equal 3,000 jobs.
