Monk Ends Barefoot Sri Lanka Trek with a Dog and Plea for Peace
Pannakara and 12 monks ended a 210-kilometre barefoot march with a plea for peace and compassion toward animals.
- On Tuesday, Texas-based Vietnamese monk Pannakara completed a 210-kilometre barefoot peace walk across Sri Lanka, reaching Colombo where President Anura Kumara Dissanayake received him alongside his rescued stray dog, Aloka.
- Hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans lined the route from Dambulla during the week-long trek, offering flowers and gifts, contrasting sharply with The Vietnamese monks' previous 3,700-kilometre walk across the United States.
- Elite army and police commandos protected the group while veterinarians monitored Aloka, a stray named after the Sanskrit word for 'light,' who accompanied the monks on their 108-day journey from Texas to Washington.
- At a ceremony at Independence Square in Colombo, Pannakara appealed for peace, stating, "If we cannot govern our own inner world with wisdom, how can we expect the outer world to remain peaceful?"
- Pannakara emphasized that Aloka communicated "something very profound," reminding devotees that compassion must extend to all living beings as the monks received a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi, symbolizing the Buddha's enlightenment in India.
