NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Launches
NASA says the $4 billion observatory could extend its five-year mission to 10 years if its fuel is conserved.
- On Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, beginning its journey to the sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2 located about 930,000 miles from Earth.
- The roughly $4 billion Roman observatory serves as a wide-angle lens designed to investigate dark energy and dark matter, which constitute 95 percent of the universe scientists do not yet understand.
- Equipped with a 300-megapixel Wide Field Instrument, Roman will survey the cosmos 1,000 times faster than the Hubble Space Telescope, potentially discovering tens of thousands of new exoplanets during its mission.
- Following successful deployment of solar panels 30 minutes after launch, Roman faces a 30-day journey to L2, where it will undergo commissioning before beginning science operations in early 2027.
- Joining the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescope, Roman will offer "a new golden age of discovery," said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, positioning the fleet to study cosmic evolution and dark forces.
