NASA’s Roman Space Telescope is about to change how we see the universe
The mission will map dark energy and dark matter, while its exoplanet census could find worlds in outer habitable zones and rare rogue planets.
- At 7 a.m., the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences hosts the Roman Space Telescope Launch Party in the SECU Daily Planet Theater, featuring a 40-foot screen showing NASA coverage.
- Surveying the sky more than 1,000 times faster than Hubble, The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope captures images covering more than 100 times the area, augmenting Webb rather than replacing it.
- Scientists will investigate dark energy and conduct a census of planets. "Roman's going to help us complete the outer edge of the habitable zone and complete that census," said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, director of NASA's Astrophysics Division.
- NASA is building a cloud-based system to host data, allowing public access without exclusive periods. "Roman doesn't do Hubble science faster," said Julie McEnery, Roman's senior project scientist.
- Researchers expect Roman to reveal rogue planets, isolated black holes, and neutron stars. "I very much hope, and in fact expect, that the most exciting science from Roman will be a surprise," McEnery said.
