The new movie about Anthony Bourdain is none of the things you fear it could be
A24's new biopic Tony, directed by Matt Johnson and starring Dominic Sessa, explores Anthony Bourdain's formative 1975 summer in Provincetown, Massachusetts, arriving in limited release today.
Following a failed literary fellowship, Johnson's narrative follows a 19-year-old, aimless Bourdain who travels to Provincetown, fictionalizing chapters from his memoir Kitchen Confidential.
Chef, played by Antonio Banderas, guides young Bourdain through his first kitchen job, helping him find belonging within the chaotic, high-pressure world of professional restaurant kitchens.
Sessa, known for The Holdovers, focused on portraying Bourdain as a young person figuring himself out rather than the fully formed adult audiences recognize: "There's countless hours of footage of him documenting the best years of his life, really," Sessa said.
Tony expands to wide release August 21, avoiding the "touch-all-the-bases sludge" of traditional biopics by focusing on one transformative summer, offering a glimpse into a culinary legend's origins.
