The balance of power in the Middle East is rapidly shifting. The effects of the conflict between Iran and Israel are spreading from the Gulf to the Red Sea, while Houthi missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia in Yemen have opened a new front. These recent developments have also brought the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, signed on August 7th between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, directly into the spotlight for the first time.
“Since you say the pact is open to other parties, and your first real target ends up being a proxy for Iran, what does that suggest about the future of the pact or where it might lead?” asks Betul Dogan Akkas, assistant professor of international relations at Ankara University.
The three countries have signed a defense agreement, known as the Mecca Pact.
