The Japan Self-Defense Forces sent 300 crew members and three CH-47 Chinook helicopters to support Indonesian efforts against worsening forest fires.
- On Thursday, the Japan Self-Defense Forces arrived at Kijing Port in West Kalimantan, Borneo, marking the military's first overseas firefighting operation with 300 crew members, the JS Kunisaki landing ship, and three Chinook helicopters.
- Intensifying dry weather and a prolonged dry season worsened Indonesia's forest fires this year, causing toxic haze to drift more than 800 kilometers and breach Malaysia's emergency threshold last week.
- The toxic haze has affected more than 1.4 million students, while Indonesia's Forestry Ministry recorded more than 202,000 hectares of burned land between January and July, prompting Japan's deployment.
- Indonesian Defence Ministry official Tri Budi Utomo stated the helicopters will be based in Pontianak, conducting flight tests prior to operations from Sept. 12 to 19.
- Working in coordination with Indonesian military forces, the JSDF aims to learn from their operational experience and support affected citizens while preventing further damage across the region.
