Man found guilty of killing brother after punching him in social club playfight
The jury found Brent Clayton guilty after CCTV and witness evidence showed the brothers’ drunken scuffle ended with a fatal blow.
Brent Clayton, 62, was convicted of manslaughter at Preston Crown Court for killing his brother, Simon Clayton, 58, during an altercation at Waterfoot Social Club on November 23, 2024.
CCTV footage captured the brothers "play fighting" before Clayton struck Simon, causing him to fall and suffer a fatal brain injury; prosecutors argued the punch was retaliation rather than self-defense.
The jury of six men and six women returned the guilty verdict after deliberating for seven hours and 12 minutes, rejecting Clayton's claim he was acting in self-defense.
Detective Inspector Tris Hardwick, of Lancashire Police's Force Major Investigation Team, stated, "This is a devastatingly sad case that shows it only takes one punch to take a life," as Clayton family members sobbed in the gallery.
The Honorary Recorder of Preston, Judge Robert Altham, remanded Clayton into custody, with his return to Preston Crown Court for sentencing scheduled for October 14.
