Seventeen people rescued after fishing boat runs aground off Orkney
HM Coastguard said the vessel issued a Mayday as rescue teams from across Orkney and aircraft from Sumburgh and Stornoway joined the response.
On Thursday, the Spanish fishing boat The Genesis ran aground at the Old Man of Hoy, Orkney Islands, after issuing a Mayday signal at 06:30.
Coastguard and lifeboat crews from RNLI Stromness, alongside helicopters from Sumburgh and Stornoway and the Northlink passenger ferry Hamnavoe, mobilized immediately to assist the vessel.
All 17 crew members were winched to safety by a Coastguard helicopter, as a westerly swell made evacuation by rescue vessel unsafe.
Rescued crew members were transported to Kirkwall Airport for evaluation, where Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service provided immediate support.
The vessel remains aground off Hoy, with the Coastguard Emergency Towing Vessel and Coastguard Counter Pollution team dispatched to manage the scene.
