The 10 cars most at risk of being fined for undeclared modifications
A survey of 2,000 UK drivers found 13% discovered hidden changes only after buying a used car, with undeclared mods risking cancelled cover.
Car marketplace Cazoo and insurance broker Tempcover identify the 10 cars most likely to have undeclared modifications, including the Volkswagen Golf GTI and BMW 3 Series.
Data from Tempcover shows 91% of drivers fail to declare unofficial Apple CarPlay or touchscreen retrofits, while 88% miss non-factory parking sensors or upgraded sound systems.
Addressing repair costs, motoring expert Michael Golson at Cazoo warned, "The big risk is the cost of reversing it." Replacing tampered emissions equipment, such as a DPF, can cost around £1,000 to £3,500.
Concealing material vehicle changes can constitute insurance fraud, warned Claire Wills-McKissick, temporary car insurance expert at Tempcover, leading to cancelled policies, potential fines, and penalty points.
Following the survey, experts advise buyers to check vehicle handbooks and ask sellers direct questions, noting 13% of drivers discover undeclared modifications only after purchasing a used car.
