Prince William Arrives at Farm for Special Royal Visit
On Thursday, Prince William visited Skenfrith to discuss local flooding concerns with villagers facing the threat of the upcoming storm season. He sought to understand how authorities can better mitigate future incidents.
Skenfrith has faced four major floods in six years, with the most severe occurring last winter when Storm Claudia brought a month's rain in 24 hours. The River Monnow swept through the Welsh village, causing widespread disruption.
Residents Rod and Helen Wyatt, who have lived in their home for 10 years, shared their flooding experience with William. Rod told The Prince, "We had to give up really, we got two bottles of Prosecco and went to watch Strictly upstairs."
The Prince proposed a "holistic" approach to tackle extreme flooding, suggesting "slowing the water down" through tree planting, farming landscaping remedies, and improved monitoring. He emphasized managing the entire catchment area to solve the broader problem.
William noted that extreme weather events are no longer "one in 50-year" occurrences but now seem to happen annually. He acknowledged the demoralizing worry residents face each year, stressing the need for urgent, updated flood strategies.
