Two heat waves, 23 new temperature extremes and a peak of 44.3oC in Mora. The IPMA traces the portrait of a historic summer, but normal in the rain.
The summer season of 2026 had two large heat waves. The second, between 29 June and 11 July, represented the third episode with the longest duration at the national level, after 1990 and 2020. The new Seasonal Bulletin of the IPMA thus reveals it, and gives good news: the precipitation above average in late August decreased the weather drought that characterized the months of June and July.
Despite the heat waves, precipitation was normal, with August recording rain 2.6 times above normal. IPMA reported 23 new temperature extremes and 17 precipitation extremes.
Temperatures were 1.21oC above average, with normal precipitation and two significant heat waves
IPMA explains that the mean air temperature was 23.17 degrees Celsius.
This year's summer was the third warmest since 1931, with a temperature of 1.21oC above the average, but was normal with regard to precipitation, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).
