BRIGHTON, UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 21 – The Chinese Room regained independence via a management buyout supported by Hiro Capital after layoffs at Sumo Group, pledging to focus on original games and new IP development.
- Recently, The Chinese Room completed a management buyout, gaining independence from Sumo Digital, at its Brighton, United Kingdom base.
- Earlier this year, Sumo Group cut 15 percent of its workforce in June 2024, pivoting away from original franchises, which prompted layoffs at the studio.
- In a deal supported by Hiro Capital, Ed Daly said `We are continuing to work on original IP`, and the studio retains 55 developers with no further layoffs planned.
- Despite the shake-up, The Chinese Room's buyout secures project continuity with Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines 2 launching in October 2025 and two new IPs in development.
