States, cities sue US agencies over weaker vehicle fuel economy rules

  • On Friday, California, New York, and two dozen other states and municipalities sued the U.S. Transportation Department, challenging its decision to finalize significantly lower vehicle fuel-economy standards.
  • President Donald Trump's administration finalized a fleetwide goal of roughly 34.9 mpg by 2031, reversing the 52.5 mpg target established under President Joe Biden to promote greater fuel efficiency.
  • The new rules restrict truck classifications, which represent about 70% of the market, and phase out credit trading. Most automakers lobbied against these changes, fearing industry-wide instability.
  • California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated the rules violate requirements to set standards at the "maximum feasible level," while a separate coalition of environmental and consumer groups also filed suit.
  • Kathy Harris, director of clean vehicles for the Natural Resources Defense Council, warned "oil companies will get a windfall" while consumers pay more at the pump amid soaring gas prices.
