South Africa police deputy chief quits amid corruption and sex offense claims
SAPS said his exit ends a four-decade career as disciplinary proceedings and criminal charges continue, including rape, trafficking and grooming allegations.
On Monday, October 12, 2026, the South African Police Service confirmed Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya resigned with immediate effect, ending his four-decade career as a dishonourable discharge due to pending disciplinary proceedings.
Sibiya remains in custody following his arrest last month on charges of rape and sexual grooming of a teenager, with a bail application hearing scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
Beyond criminal charges, Sibiya faced seven disciplinary counts including alleged misconduct involving businessman Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and allegations raised during testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The resignation abruptly ended a career marked by controversy, including his 2015 dismissal from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation , known as the Hawks, later overturned by the Labour Appeal Court in 2022.
Sibiya faces allegations of colluding with Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to disband the political killings task team , allegedly to shield organised crime syndicates from investigation, among other ongoing allegations.
