Former Right-Hand Man of Purged Chongqing Chief Bo Xilai Under Investigation, China’s Graft Watchdog Says
The watchdog said Huang Qifan, 74, is under suspicion of law and discipline violations after moving into advisory and think-tank roles.
- On Tuesday, China's anti-graft watchdog announced that former Chongqing Mayor Huang Qifan has been placed under investigation for suspected corruption, termed "law and discipline violations."
- Huang previously served as key right-hand man to former Communist Party chief Bo Xilai, describing their relationship as "fish and water" before surviving the 2012 political purge.
- Often dubbed a "financial mayor" by Chinese media, Huang developed a reputation for commanding banking, property, and fiscal policy, later serving as vice chairman of the 12th National People's Congress Economic Affairs Committee.
- Since leaving the mayoralty in December 2016, Huang transitioned into advisory and think-tank work, currently serving as an academic adviser to the China Finance 40 Forum.
- After Bo was ousted, Huang claimed the former leader's legacy of "vanity projects" had been "banished," stating they "tired the people and drained money"—a swift disavowal that helped him retain political standing.
