Solar Eclipse Explained: What Happens in the Sky During the Stunning Celestial Event

NASA says the moon will cover only part of the sun, and observers in 26 states and Washington, D.C., must use eye protection.

  • Parts of the United States, from Alaska to North Carolina, will witness a partial solar eclipse today. Some 26 states and Washington will have an opportunity to see the celestial event.
  • Unlike the 2024 total solar eclipse that blanketed 13 states across North America, today's partial event offers limited reach. The 2024 eclipse spanned a 115-mile-wide path of totality.
  • A partial solar eclipse occurs when the moon creates an imperfect alignment between the Earth and the sun, according to NASA. The moon will only partly cover the sun, resembling a crescent shape.
  • Observers must wear proper safety glasses at all times to protect their eyes from the sun's harmful rays. Unlike the total eclipse, there is no moment during this partial event when it is safe to view without protection.
  • The next total solar eclipse visible in the contiguous United States will not occur until 2044. Outside the lower 48 states, Alaska is set to experience a total solar eclipse in the future.
