How to Safely Watch UK Solar Eclipse 2026 According to Optometrist
NASA-backed safety advice urges viewers to use certified eclipse glasses, solar filters or projection methods as the Moon covers up to 90% of the Sun.
On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the deepest solar eclipse in nearly three decades will obscure more than 90 per cent of the Sun across the UK between 6:17 PM and 8:06 PM.
Boots Opticians Director of Optical Practice Kyla Black warns that viewing without ISO 12312-2 certified glasses risks permanent retina damage, as reduced brightness during an eclipse tricks the eye's natural defenses.
Paul Fellows, chairman of the Cambridge Astronomical Association, advises that Cambridge will see maximum coverage at 7:12 PM, suggesting safe projection methods like pinhole cards or a colander if specialized glasses are unavailable.
The eclipse coincides with the annual Perseid meteor shower, which generates displays of "shooting stars" as comet Swift-Tuttle fragments collide with Earth, an event astronomers call being "doubly blessed."
Not seen in the UK since 1999, this celestial event represents the most significant obscuration of the Sun, with similar coverage not expected until 2081 and a total solar eclipse in 2090.
