Social Security Becomes an Urgent Issue for Americans This Midterms Season
A Peterson Foundation survey found 91% of voters support changes to prevent automatic benefit cuts, and 72% back a higher payroll tax cap.

- Ninety-One percent of respondents support reforms to prevent automatic benefit cuts, while 88% believe lawmakers have not discussed the issue sufficiently, the survey found. Additionally, 68% of battleground voters opposed adding to the record $40 trillion U.S. deficit to solve the shortfall.
- Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin is co-sponsoring the Social Security 2100 Act, while Republican Senators Thom Tillis and John Cornyn support the bipartisan PROMISE Act, each proposing different approaches to ensure long-term funding.
- Control of the Senate remains at stake in November's midterm elections, with the nonpartisan Cook Political Report rating all five battleground state races as competitive, amplifying pressure on candidates to address the insolvency crisis before voters decide.
