Social Security cost of living increase: Prepare to be disappointed, experts warn

Federal law requires the Social Security Administration to calculate annual adjustments using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers , averaging data from July, August, and September.
A 3.6% increase would add about $72 monthly for a retiree receiving a $2,000 benefit, raising the average payment to around $2,143 from current levels.
The Social Security Administration clarified that no broad cuts have been approved for 2027, noting confusion stems from actuarial analyses modeling potential long-term reforms rather than immediate policy changes.
Without Congressional action, the Social Security Board of Trustees warns the program could face a 22% reduction in benefit payments by 2032, though payroll tax revenue would still cover about three-fourths of scheduled benefits.
