Contingency plans in place for Singapore F1 amid haze: STB
On Thursday, Singapore faced 'unhealthy' air quality from Indonesian wildfires just days before the Singapore Grand Prix, with smoke shrouding the city-state as F1 drivers and personnel arrived from Malaysia.
Wildfires in neighboring Sumatra and Kalimantan fueled the haze, intensified by a 'super El Niño' in the region, while southeasterly winds continued drifting smoke toward Singapore on Wednesday evening.
The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile insisted it has 'no concerns' about visibility, while the Singapore Tourism Board activated contingency plans covering 24-hour PSI and 1-hour PM2.5 levels.
While the race itself is not expected to be affected, the FIA noted worsening haze could bring 'some restrictions' on outdoor entertainment, with organizers monitoring conditions for around 300,000 spectators.
Rain forecast for Friday and Saturday afternoon may provide relief at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, and organizers previously managed similar 'unhealthy' conditions in 2019 by offering N95 masks and first aid.
Air quality remains in the ‘unhealthy’ category on Thursday morning ahead of the Formula 1 night race this coming weekend. The increased air pollution is the result of forest fires in neighboring Indonesia. The Indonesian islands of Borneo and Sumatra, in particular, are battling very severe, large-scale forest and peat fires.
