Simple kitchen mistake could attract rats amid UK ‘plague’ warning
Wheeldon Brothers says exposed food scraps and overflowing bins can draw rodents, with the British Pest Control Association estimating up to 120 million rats in the UK.
Insurance experts at Tiger warned homeowners of a rat "plague" this autumn following a warm summer with record-breaking temperatures that provided ideal breeding conditions.
The British Pest Control Association estimates between 10.5 and 120 million rats inhabit the UK, with cooler autumn weather expected to drive rodents indoors seeking warm shelter and food sources.
Waste expert James Ward of Wheeldon Brothers advised homeowners to bag food waste properly and keep bin lids firmly shut, warning that even small spills attract rodents from surprising distances.
"Preventing access to food is one of the most effective ways to discourage rodents from hanging around your home in the first place," Ward said, as rats may nest nearby if shelter is available.
Homeowners planning to sell property soon should remain vigilant, as regulations require declaring any existing rat infestation before finalizing a house sale.
