Pakistan urges Afghan Taliban to stop militants from carrying out cross-border attacks

Pakistan cited more than 6,000 TTP fighters in Afghanistan and warned the militants could also threaten Taliban rule, officials said.

  • On Monday, Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar warned the Afghan Taliban regime will face consequences if it fails to stop militants operating from Afghan territory. "If the Afghan government does not take action against terrorists, one day it will have to face the consequences itself," Dar said.
  • Citing a 13% rise in attacks during September, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar reported that Afghanistan hosts more than 6,000 Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan fighters and more than 20,000 militants overall. Tarar accused the TTP of using Afghan territory to recruit and plan attacks.
  • Pakistan has completed nearly 95% of a fence along the 2,600-kilometer border to curb infiltration, while Dar stated the country has "sacrificed more than 90,000 lives in the war against terrorism." The fence began in 2017 to stop cross-border attacks.
  • Dar, who previously warned Afghan Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund in July 2025, noted that diplomatic and economic overtures to Kabul have yielded no meaningful progress on curbing militant safe havens. Pakistan had held trilateral talks in Kabul last year on counterterrorism.
  • The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan documented more than 1,100 civilian deaths and injuries from cross-border violence this year, as officials warned that militant safe havens used against Pakistan could eventually threaten other nations and regional stability.
