Shas leader Arye Deri claims IDF prefers secular army, haredi soldiers are 'a big headache'
Naftali Bennett responded to Deri's comments, saying the Shas chairman is "harming IDF soldiers," adding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is "spreading blood libels about IDF commanders."
The Shas chairman said in an interview with Kol Berama Radio that "the IDF wants a secular army, not one that listens to their rabbis," and that only recently "when the shortcomings of a small, technological army became clear, did they realize that more soldiers were needed to guard the borders."
The Shas chairman claimed in a radio interview that the IDF is not interested in recruiting Haredim and said: "I don't need to call on Haredim who don't study Torah to enlist." The interview was part of the party's election campaign, and after Deri passed a law last July freezing the detention of Haredi deserters.
