Sept. 11 attack anniversary reminder of Canada-U.S. ties, St. Catharines mayor says
The city is adding nine trees to honor survivors and first responders as officials say the memorial reflects stronger Canada-U.S. ties.
- Mayor Mat Siscoe and Baxter Hunt mark the 25th anniversary today at the Catharines, Ont., 9/11 memorial trail at Happy Rolph’s Animal Farm, which is expanding by planting nine trees.
- This Friday marks 25 years since nearly 3,000 people were killed when Qaida hijackers slammed planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field.
- The memorial trail, which opened in 2006, honors 24 Canadians and three United States citizens. Additionally, The Canadian Red Cross sent 146 volunteers to New York to assist with recovery efforts.
- Despite an escalating trade war, Siscoe emphasized that ties between the countries' people remain strong. "I think if nothing else, this is a recognition that the ties that bind our peoples are a lot stronger than any trade war," he said.
- On the day of the attacks, more than 200 planes were diverted to Canada. The Newfoundland community of Gander famously took in 38 passenger planes carrying more than 6,500 travellers, demonstrating shared bilateral history.
