Local Salmonella Outbreak Tied to Raw Eggs Grows to 21 Cases, 7 Hospitalized
Health officials say 21 people have been sickened, including seven hospitalized, as investigators trace the outbreak to mayonnaise made with raw eggs.
On Monday, San Diego County officials linked a Salmonella outbreak to Happy Hens, a local egg supplier, after tracing the source to raw eggs used in mayonnaise at a Ramona delicatessen.
Investigators tracked the initial outbreak to mayonnaise made with raw, unpasteurized eggs at Ramona Family Naturals Market, though Happy Hens denied on social media that the farm is linked to the cases.
Rising from 13 cases reported on July 28, the outbreak now totals 21 cases, including seven hospitalizations, and is distinct from the multi-state outbreak in the Midwest.
Retail food facilities that may have received eggs from Happy Hens were contacted by the County Department of Environmental Health and Quality with reminders about proper storage, grading requirements, and resales.
Health investigators urge consumers to cook eggs until yolks and whites are firm and discard suspicious or broken eggs, as Salmonella can be severe for children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals.
