Russian Ballistic Missiles Kill At Least 12 in Kyiv, Authorities Say
Ukraine's air defense struggled against a massive barrage of 168 drones and dozens of missiles, resulting in widespread destruction and casualties.
- On Thursday, Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv, killing 12 people and injuring more than 30, authorities said. The barrage damaged residential blocks, a school, and a children's hospital while severing power to parts of the capital.
- Moscow has intensified aerial strikes in recent months, exploiting Ukraine's critical shortage of interceptors. The Russian defense ministry claimed it launched a "massive strike using high-precision weapons" against military facilities, depots, and logistics hubs in the region.
- Ukraine's air force reported Russia launched dozens of missiles alongside 168 drones during the overnight assault. Utility provider DTEK subsequently restored electricity to more than half of the roughly 90,000 homes left without power following the bombardment.
- Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared Friday a day of mourning for the victims. Poland, Romania, and Moldova activated air-defense measures and reported drone incursions, protecting their airspace during the assault.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed calls for more interceptor missiles, warning that peace remains elusive without sufficient air defenses. Diplomatic proposals submitted to US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have stalled.
