Dylan Garand Makes 23 Saves for 1st Career Shutout as Rangers Beat Red Wings 2
Garand stopped 23 shots for his first career shutout as New York scored twice and Detroit was blanked in its home opener.
On Friday, goaltender Dylan Garand made 22 saves in his first career shutout as the New York Rangers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 in their season opener.
Detroit began the season without former captain Dylan Larkin, sidelined by an upper-body injury, and restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson, whose contract negotiations remain stalled.
While the Wings won 55 percent of faceoffs and landed 29 body checks, they managed just two shots on goal during the final period.
Sean Durzi scored on a power play and Eeli Tolvanen added an empty-netter, prompting frustrated fans to chant "Sell the team!" at owner Chris Ilitch.
Detroit hosts Winnipeg on Sunday with 83 games remaining to correct their early-season offensive struggles.
