BC Prosecution Service says appeal not viable after man accused of murder acquitted
The BC Prosecution Service decided not to appeal the acquittal of Frederick Charlie, who was accused of killing Vanessa Terry, due to the exclusion of his alleged confession arising from degrading police treatment.
Vanessa Terry, a mother of three, was found dead on April 6, 2024, at her home on the Seabird Island First Nation reserve, in a suspected case of intimate partner violence.
Frederick Charlie was charged with second-degree murder but was acquitted after prosecutors presented no evidence following the confession's exclusion.
Justice Palbinder Shergill criticized police tactics during the investigation, including an officer urinating on himself while undercover as Charlie's cellmate.
