Rare Humpback Birth Caught in Australian Drone Footage
ORRCA said the footage is believed to be the first drone recording of a humpback whale birth and only the fourth complete birth ever filmed.
- On Monday, drone pilot Alexander Forrest captured the first known drone footage of a humpback whale giving birth off the coast of Kingscliff, New South Wales, marking a world-first achievement.
- University of New South Wales PhD candidate Jane McPhee-Frew noted researchers are 'having to unlearn a little bit' about humpback whale birthing locations, as they previously believed tropical waters were required.
- Working with the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia , Forrest filmed the mother from about 700 metres off shore, becoming one of just four people to document such an event.
