I Ordered Raid in Central Jail Due to Lapses: Minister Priyank Kharge
Alok Kumar said the seizure triggered a probe into prison security lapses and led to the suspension of an assistant superintendent.
On Tuesday, the Central Crime Branch seized an Android phone from Prajwal Revanna's barrack during a five-hour surprise inspection at the High Security Prison in Bengaluru.
Revanna, a former Hassan Lok Sabha MP, is serving a life sentence for rape; prison authorities searched his barrack on August 6 but found no contraband then.
Following the seizure, Director General Alok Kumar suspended Assistant Superintendent Iranna Rangapur for dereliction of duty, and authorities filed an FIR at the Parappana Agrahara Police Station.
Allegations of VIP treatment at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison have surfaced repeatedly, and the incident has brought renewed scrutiny on security and surveillance measures inside the facility.
Police have initiated a detailed inquiry to ascertain how the mobile phone entered the prison, while the CCB continues investigating the circumstances surrounding the contraband discovery.
Trouble has worsened for former BJP MP Prajwal Revanna, who is in jail in connection with a rape case. A mobile phone, pen drive, and charger were found in his barracks, prompting a new FIR to be filed.
