France has witnessed an unprecedented wave of arrests against the backdrop of school protests that in some areas have turned into violence, with authorities arresting some 2,000 people, most of whom face charges of assault against police officers. The Ministry of the Interior reported that on Thursday there were 1949 detainees, and a total of 305 police and gendarmerie officers were injured.
Today, around 400 schools are expected to remain closed, but will operate via distance learning, announced Education Minister Edouard Geoffrey.
