Prison Officer and Inmate Shared Thousands of Messages on Snapchat, Court Told
More than 10,000 messages and images linked the former prison officer to the inmate, prosecutors said.
On Friday, former HMP Long Lartin custody officer Jade Morris was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment at Birmingham Crown Court for misconduct in public office, while inmate Jerome Nunes received nine months for Prison Act offenses.
Prison authorities uncovered the secret relationship in October 2022 after Nunes threw an encrypted mobile phone from his cell window during a search, revealing they exchanged more than 10,000 illicit messages over six months.
Investigators established contact after finding a number saved as "Ghost" in Morris's phone, yet she initially dismissed the allegations as "ludicrous" when arrested in January 2023 before pleading guilty after digital evidence contradicted her account.
Crown Prosecution Service representative Georgina Davies stated the case involved a "sustained and deliberate breach of that trust," noting Morris directly facilitated criminal offending and undermined prison security while working at the Category A facility.
Nunes was serving a 12-year sentence for a drugs conspiracy offense imposed in 2019 when the relationship occurred; his defense lawyer described him as a "man in a hurry" now running a small food business.
