The watchdog is reviewing the pursuit and collision that killed seven people, as Cleveland Police says the officers were not part of the chase.

  • Cleveland Police officers initiated a pursuit after spotting a suspicious vehicle, which then traveled onto the A66 against traffic and struck the marked police car at 3:39 AM.
  • North East Ambulance Service dispatched 14 units, including a hazardous area response team and a doctor from Great North Air Ambulance Service, to the crash site.
  • The Independent Office for Police Conduct opened an investigation following a mandatory referral from Cleveland Police, with director Nicola Marfleet stating, "This is a tragic incident."
  • Redcar MP Anna Turley urged the public to "avoid speculating online" to respect affected families, while the A66 remains closed between Normanby Road and Church Lane in Eston.
