Police officers among seven killed in fatal crash
The watchdog is reviewing the pursuit and collision that killed seven people, as Cleveland Police says the officers were not part of the chase.
- Seven people, including police officers PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, died Saturday morning when a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way collided with their marked police vehicle on the A66 near Middlesbrough.
- Cleveland Police officers initiated a pursuit after spotting a suspicious vehicle, which then traveled onto the A66 against traffic and struck the marked police car at 3:39 AM.
- North East Ambulance Service dispatched 14 units, including a hazardous area response team and a doctor from Great North Air Ambulance Service, to the crash site.
- The Independent Office for Police Conduct opened an investigation following a mandatory referral from Cleveland Police, with director Nicola Marfleet stating, "This is a tragic incident."
- Redcar MP Anna Turley urged the public to "avoid speculating online" to respect affected families, while the A66 remains closed between Normanby Road and Church Lane in Eston.
