Larger, more agile, more numerous: Chinese humanoid robots made a strong impression at the Beijing show. But behind the entertainment, a still infancy industry is still looking for the key to make them autonomous and therefore useful.
Beijing was transformed into the scene of an unusual sporting event for several days. More than two thousand humanoid robots from 16 countries competed in dozens of disciplines – from running, football and martial arts to tasks inspired by household and industrial work. In addition to the curious spectacle, the World Games also showed where contemporary robotics has advanced and how humanoids compare to humans.
Although China is investing huge resources in the development of humanoid robots, the current technology is still far from being able to replace human workers on a large scale. Recent studies show that the machines' physical and decision-making abilities are still far from what was expected, so jobs are safe for now.
