Orbán Concealed the Reality of Hungary’s Children’s Homes

Around 7,000 children currently live in children’s homes in Hungary. A report produced in early 2024 exposed appalling conditions in these institutions, but the Orbán government chose instead to conceal the reality: abuse, a lack of psychological support, starvation, and outdated, unusable furniture and equipment. After the pardon scandal, Bence Rétvári publicly announced that a national investigation would be launched to uncover what was going on inside the walls of the orphanages. Direkt36 sued over the reports, which also mentioned moldy walls, dangerous conditions, and serious deficiencies.

Inspections ordered in 2024, the results of which the government did not make public for a long time, revealed serious shortcomings and, in many cases, inhumane conditions in children's homes in Hungary. The documents reveal, among other things, that children had to live in moldy, dark, dirty and accident-prone environments, while many institutions also struggled with a shortage of professionals.
