Parliament elected András Baka, the former President of the Supreme Court, as President of the Republic on August 11, after he had been nominated by the governing Tisza group. Baka was elected by MPs in a secret ballot with 140 votes in favour and 6 against, with opposition Fidesz and the Christian Democrats (KDNP) not taking part in the vote.Continue reading

On Wednesday, 19 August, Andrash Baka officially assumed the presidency of Hungary, and the new Head of State elected the National Assembly on 11 August.
Former president of the country's Supreme Court of Magic and the European Court of Human Rights, replaces Tamas Sulyok and states that Hungary "needs justice", with a future that "cannot be built on revenge"
The president of the republic cannot act as a check on power in the Hungarian system, but András Baka promised: he will not remain silent if he sees the constitutional functioning in danger. From now on, people can turn to him for clemency, he will nominate a new chief prosecutor, and he is preparing to take on a more active diplomatic role than his predecessor.
"As of today, August 19, 2026, Dr. Andras Baka is the president of Hungary," said Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar on his Facebook account.
