NOAA Updates Its 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast After Below-Average Start

NOAA said El Niño-driven wind shear and only two named storms so far have lowered its forecast to 7 to 13 named storms.

  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration raised its probability of a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season to 75 percent, maintaining its prediction for the remainder of the year.
  • Forecasters attribute the forecast change to strengthening El Niño conditions, which increase wind shear and typically prevent tropical storms from forming or strengthening in the Atlantic.
  • NOAA dropped its predicted named storms to between seven and 13, with a 20% chance of a near-normal season and only a 5% chance of an above-normal season.
  • To date, the 2026 season has produced two named tropical storms, Arthur and Bertha, both in the Gulf; however, up to two major hurricanes with winds starting at 111 mph remain possible.
  • Last week, AccuWeather maintained its forecast of eight to 14 named storms, while Colorado State University researchers further reduced their projections on Wednesday as the season continues through Nov.
