Nigeria warns flare-gas investors they could lose permits
The commission said it will review 27 awarded sites after one year and revoke permits where operators show little progress.
- On Tuesday, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission Chief Executive Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan warned that the commission will revoke permits awarded under the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme if investors fail to demonstrate significant progress within one year of issuance.
- The NGFCP, launched by the Federal Government in 2016 to end routine gas flaring by 2030, has awarded 27 of 43 identified flare sites to investors despite initial operator resistance, according to the commission.
- Nigeria boasts over 215 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves, with an estimated total reserve base of about 600 TCF, positioning the country for increased power generation and industrialization, Eyesan said.
- Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Ekperikpe Ekpo called for aggressive implementation of gas commercialization initiatives to help Nigeria achieve its 2030 target of ending routine gas flaring and deriving greater economic value.
- The Petroleum Industry Act established the Host Community Development Trust framework to address oil-producing community concerns, with 173 trusts incorporated, 147 funded, and over 1,001 projects currently ongoing across host communities.
