A journalist is named king of a Ugandan monarchy that just lost its one-time ‘boy king’
The clan said consultations and due diligence guided the choice of the state broadcaster editor after King Oyo’s death.
- On Wednesday, the Babiito clan succession committee named Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma the next Omukama of the Tooro Kingdom, following King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV's death on August 27, 2026.
- A committee of 21 members, with 19 signatories, endorsed Kijanangoma for the throne following extensive consultations and due diligence. The group stated the enthronement will follow established cultural traditions.
- Kijanangoma, a cousin of the late king, is a news anchor and editor with the state broadcaster Uganda Broadcasting Corporation. He is expected to be crowned this week.
- Ruth Komuntale, Oyo's sister, rejected the choice, describing it as "very dramatic" and an attempt to "bring division and turmoil." She asserted Oyo's written will clearly stated he left an heir.
- While Uganda's traditional kingdoms lack formal political authority, they remain significant as guardians of tribal culture. Succession arrangements are attracting attention from the royal family as King Oyo will be buried Saturday near the Congo border.
