NHS in talks to roll out Alzheimer’s drug

The pTau217 test can identify Alzheimer’s pathology in 18 minutes and is expected to reach clinicians in six to nine months, researchers said.

  • On Thursday, Health Minister Mark Butler will launch the Asia-Pacific Centre of Excellence for Alzheimer's Diagnosis in Sydney, following the Therapeutic Goods Administration's approval of the pTau217 blood test for clinical use.
  • Unlike the previously approved pTau181 'rule-out' test, the new pTau217 assay functions as both a 'rule-out' and 'rule-in' test, achieving about 90 per cent diagnostic accuracy.
  • Processing samples in 18 minutes, the new diagnostic tool offers a viable alternative to invasive lumbar punctures or expensive PET scans currently used for confirming pathology.
  • NeuRA CEO Professor Matthew Kiernan stated the centre will generate reference data required for a Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme listing, enabling doctors across Australia to order the test within six to nine months.
  • Because protein changes occur 30 years before symptoms develop, early detection allows clinicians to intervene with disease-modifying therapies before significant neuronal death occurs in Alzheimer disease.
