Video. Nepal Orders Evacuations After Landslide Triggers Budhi Gandaki Flash Flood
Authorities rescued 49 people and warned riverside communities as the flood swept away about a dozen houses and two suspension bridges.
- On Sunday, Nepali authorities ordered evacuations along the Budhi Gandaki River after a landslide in Chumnubri, Gorkha district, blocked the waterway and triggered downstream flooding in the country's north-central region.
- Situated 100 kilometers west of Kathmandu, the landslide-blocked Budhi Gandaki surged with muddy sludge, destroying a highway bridge connecting Gorkha with the neighboring Dhading district, officials reported.
- The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported two women and three men missing, while Nepal Army and police personnel deployed rescue teams and monitored the situation from a helicopter.
- "We have asked villagers to evacuate and remain safe," said Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, Gorkha's most senior bureaucrat, as authorities alerted residents in Tanahun, Chitwan, East Nawalparasi, and West Nawalparasi.
- Nepal continues to recover from August floods along the China border that killed more than 1,400 people, while managing reconstruction costs estimated at $4.77 billion from that earlier disaster.
