Pubs and shops can now accept digital ID for alcohol purchases in England and Wales
The voluntary system requires app-based authentication and is expected to work offline, while physical ID remains valid for customers and businesses.
On Tuesday, England and Wales allow businesses to accept digital ID for alcohol purchases, offering an alternative to physical documents for age verification.
Customers can use third-party apps like Yoti, Post Office, or Luciditi, which generate a QR code valid for around 30 seconds to prevent fraud and identity misuse.
Digital Government Minister Stephanie Peacock said the option would "mean you do not need to carry a physical ID," allowing patrons to "feel safer on a night out."
UKHospitality Chief Executive Allen Simpson called the new rules a "positive step," adding that the industry will ensure the scheme's roll-out is not "burdensome" for businesses.
The government intends to extend digital proof of age beyond alcohol to tobacco and vapes, though businesses are not legally required to stop accepting physical IDs.
