N.B. residents file claim against 'sickening' smell from Covered Bridge chip factory
Seventeen residents say smells and industrial noise from a retrofitted warehouse have disrupted their neighborhood and could hurt property values.
A group of 17 Woodstock residents filed legal claims against Covered Bridge Potato Chips Ltd., alleging significant and ongoing disruption to their lives, represented by lawyer Basile Chiasson seeking to oust the company from their neighbourhood.
After Covered Bridge's Hartland chipmaking plant burned down in early 2024, the company retrofitted a Woodstock storage warehouse into a factory in 2025, though residents believed the facility would only be temporary.
Graphic designer Kelly Atherton said the smell made her 'feel sick to my stomach,' while retiree Melody Hannah reported her 18-year-old son Dylan experiences migraines from industrial lights and gagging from factory odours.
The Farm Practices Review Board will first evaluate the residents' claims, with possible escalation to the Court of King's Bench, while Covered Bridge founder Ryan Albright told AllNewBrunswick.com the Hartland property's future remains 'undecided.'
Residents question why the Town of Woodstock approved the expansion, with retired educator Gordon Porter stating 'It's deeply disturbing that this level of intense industrial development was seen as appropriate by either the company management or the town officials.
