Tumbler Ridge shooting documents detail confusion around number of shooters
Police say the suspect had two ChatGPT accounts and investigators found 12 PRIME files tied to his history with police.
Recently released court documents provide insight into the February mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where Jesse Van Rootselaar killed eight people before dying of a self-inflicted wound.
Police confirmed Van Rootselaar acted alone after reviewing CCTV footage, as approximately 70 statements from teachers, students, and first responders clarified initial confusion regarding a potential second shooter.
OpenAI discovered two ChatGPT accounts linked to Van Rootselaar, banning one in June 2025, but failed to notify authorities about suspected violent content until the Federal Bureau of Investigations contacted investigators on Feb. 15.
Jonathan Paquin sought records for the ChatGPT accounts to provide investigation evidence, warning that premature disclosure of the Information to Obtain "could influence and impact the goal and purpose of the Coroners Inquest."
Although no date is set for the Coroner Inquest, support services including the Suicide Crisis Helpline remain available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for those affected by the tragedy.
