Narwale with measuring instruments have supplied data from more than 1500 meters depth. They show how far warm Atlantic water is now penetrating – up to the glaciersNarwale swim to where research vessels reach their limits: deep into the remote fjords of East Greenland, under sea ice and in waters, cold to near freezing point. The Arctic marine mammals also dive in winter, thus reaching the most remote corners of the icy waters.
Measuring aid with tusk: Six narwals have recorded temperature and salinity in East Greenland's scoreby-sund system up to more than 1,500 meters depth. Together with historical measuring series, their data show that warm, salt-rich Atlantic water penetrates far into the fjords and reaches deep glacier basins there.
