A truck ban has been in effect there since mid-July, but it is being ignored en masse, particularly by foreign truckers. In mid-July, a traffic ban for trucks over 3.5 tons GVW came into effect on the Dutch A27 motorway. This ban was introduced near Gorinchem following the discovery of dangerous damage to the 65-year-old Merwedebrug bridge. Rijkswaterstaat issued 34 fines on Monday to trucks or coaches driving over the Merwede Bridge. It was the first day that police motorcycle officers conducted checks to enforce the ban on heavy traffic.
