Japan and OAS award Haiti $3M to help troubled country prepare for long-awaited elections
The grant will fund voter lists, 350,000 blank ID cards and expanded registration services as Haiti prepares for elections, officials said.
On Tuesday, Japan and The OAS signed a deal to award Haiti a $3 million grant for voter registration as the nation prepares for its first general elections in more than a decade.
Haiti has not had a president since Jovenel was killed in July 2021, creating a political vacuum that has delayed elections for years.
Gang violence has displaced a record 1.5 million Haitians, with many leaving IDs behind when fleeing attacks; gangs control 70% of Port-au-Prince territory where registration began last month.
The $3 million grant will help the government update voter lists and procure 350,000 blank IDs, while The OAS stated the funding expands rural services and improves internet connections.
Scheduled for Dec 13, the first round of elections faces uncertainty as experts warn that ongoing gang violence in Haiti could push back the date.
