MNP Debt Index: Canadians Worry About Jobs and AI as Nearly Half Seek Extra Income
Nearly half of Canadians say they have tried side income, and 55% worry about job mobility as AI and trade tensions reshape work.
On Monday, Oct. 05, 2026, the MNP Consumer Debt Index conducted by Ipsos revealed nearly half of Canadians have attempted to earn additional income, reflecting a broader 'second-income economy' amid persistent economic uncertainty.
Economic instability, trade tensions, and artificial intelligence concerns are reshaping the labor market, with more than half of working Canadians expressing worry about job mobility and career opportunities.
Selling goods online via platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Etsy is the most common approach, with 21% of Canadians diversifying their earnings to improve prospects in a tightening job market.
Despite these efforts, more than two in five Canadians report they are on the brink of insolvency, remaining within $200 of being unable to meet their monthly financial obligations.
York University assistant professor Asmita Bhutani notes that while temporary work has long existed, multiple income streams are becoming normalized. "I haven't really met a worker who said that I do five jobs and I love them all," she said.
